DSLZoneuk.net have an online ADSL bandwidth checker which claims to estimate the top speed that your telephone line will support. It does this by asking you enter 3 values into a form, your current line speed ( 512k, 1Mb or 2Mb ), your Downstream Signal/Noise ratio and downstream Attenuation. The latter 2 values will need to be retrieved from your current ADSL router/modem, usually these are displayed on the ADSL connection status screen ( you will need to check your router configuration guide to find out how to do this for your router )
With these three figures it then produces an estimate of the maximum you might reasonably expect to acheive when your ISP finally upgrades your broadband to its “up to 8Mb” package.
Just tried it on mine and the estimate produced was between 6 and 6.8Mbps which I would be quite happy with thank you very much…. Now all I have to do is wait for Plus.net to upgrade me ! ( though I won’t be holding my breath as I understand there are currently problems with the upgrade process and future upgrades are I think on hold for now )

1Cool! I was very excited to know about ADSL connection status screen. The line speed ( 512k, 1Mb or 2Mb ) is really good to carry with …..!
