Whilst the built in browser on the RIM Blackberry handheld is more than adequate for most ad-hoc web surfing it quickly becomes limiting when trying to browse News sites such as Slashdot and Digg.com
. What is needed for these sites is an RSS reader for Blackberry.
Litefeeds.com
offers a nice solution for this that works on Blackberry as well as Java enabled mobiles, Pocket PC’s, Palms and Smartphones. The Blackberry software can be installed over the air by navigating in the Blackberry Browser to http://mobile.litefeeds.com
. Once installed the software launches from the Blackberry home screen into the configuration settings. Here you need to enter your Litefeeds.com account user name and password ( if you haven’t registered already you can do this for free on the Litefeeds web site ). Once you have done this you will see a list of available feeds ( registering generates a set of sample feeds for you ) which can be read by selecting the Read Feed option from the Litefeeds menu. To add new feeds to the list ( or remove the sample ones ) you will need to login to the Litefeeds web site and select the Add or Edit Feeds menu. On the Litefeeds homepage there is a useful Bookmarklet that you can install in your browser which identifies any RSS feeds on the current browser page and allows you select and add them to your Litefeeds account.
Apart from the ability to browse through articles on your mobile the Litefeeds client software can save the current article to your Del.icio.us
account, email the article as link or post the article to your Blog. These options are again configured by logging into your Litefeeds account in a normal web browser.
Overall this is a nice easy way to view RSS feeds on a Blackberry. Recommended.
